Reports To: Director of Resident Services or department head

Job Status: Nonexempt, Full-Time

Compensation: $24.04/hr. to $26.00/hr., DOE; medical, dental, vision & retirement plan

About Mission Housing:

Mission Housing Development Corporation is a private non-profit housing developer founded in 1971. Mission Housing develops high-quality, well-managed, affordable, sustainable communities that promote the self-sufficiency of low and moderate income families, seniors, and persons with diverse needs and offers technical assistance to service providers to help them develop affordable housing that meets the needs of special populations with a comprehensive vision of community. We own approximately 49 affordable housing buildings serving over 3,300 residents with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in San Francisco.

Summary:

This position will be responsible for leading the outreach, educational and tenant leadership development aspects of the program, including training development, facilitation, and logistics at Valencia Gardens, an affordable housing site owned by Mission Housing. The organizer will also work in collaboration with on-site Resident Services and Property Management teams. The position will be aided by executive staff, as well as staff from the Resident Services Department.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports the Director of Resident Services or department head with all administrative and logistical details related to the development and delivery of resident trainings, and leadership development.
  • Works with the Director of Resident Services or department head to design and implement program for residents.
  • Performs necessary research for trainings.
  • Seeks out expert speakers/trainers if/when needed.
  • Performs/assists with other training and leadership development duties as assigned by the Director of Resident Services or department head.
  • Assists with creation and production of educational training materials.
  • Attends and assists (if/when needed) with ongoing resident meetings with Resident Service Coordinator(s).
  • Develops and maintains a collection of curricula and training materials.
  • Manages and administers city grant including submission of outcomes/activities.
  • Works in collaboration with RSC Department, participates in weekly meetings, and supports site and community activities, including food pantries.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Social Justice, Business.
  • Minimum 3 years of community engagement experience, working with diverse populations, and in public speaking
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, make presentations, facilitate meetings, and develop and conduct trainings.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Google Documents, Word and PowerPoint, as well as working knowledge of spreadsheets and database software.
  • Strong commitment to the housing movement and/or social justice work.
  • Demonstrated ability to write curricula, using a variety of adult teaching techniques appropriate for action-oriented education.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relations with diverse membership and staff.
  • Special interest in building power among affordable housing residents to fight for social, economic and racial justice.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Cantonese, Spanish, Russian
  • 2 years previous experience working as a community organizer and/or educator with low-income people.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be willing to travel from various sites
  • Ability to handle a significant level of stress
  • Responsible to set up and clean up facilities utilized for events with occasional lifting, bending and pushing
