OPPORTUNITY

The Beach Cleanup Coordinator position involves overseeing, managing and coordinating all cleanup activities for the Beach Cleanup program. Coordinators are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations, goals and objectives of the program; effectively communicating with volunteers, staff, external stakeholders and diverse partners and ensuring the program’s overall success. They must be well-organized, have a strong ability to balance multiple projects and must possess excellent communication and leadership skills. This is a full-time, 40 hours/week position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support, manage, and expand the chapter’s corporate and public beach cleanup programs. This includes permitting and supply management, scheduling, coordinating and hosting sponsored cleanups, and supporting public cleanup site volunteer leads.
• Support partnerships with community groups to expand the scope of the beach cleanup program to serve more communities up the watershed
• Respond directly to inquiries from corporations looking to partner and/or participate in a company beach cleanup. Manage corporate contributions to the chapter that come through corporate cleanups, and consult with Surfrider Foundation corporate partnerships team for guidance and coordination.
• Solicit the chapter’s sponsored public and private beach cleanup programs to local businesses and corporations
• Ensure all cleanups are approved and insured by Surfrider Foundation Headquarters via the established Event Approval Process. Ensure city and/or state park permit applications are completed when necessary.
• Create Beach Cleanup opportunities in the Golden Volunteer Management platform and promote accordingly
• Supervise all beach cleanup data entry and ensure all data is reported to Surfrider’s National Beach Cleanup Database individually and through service learning programs and other volunteers.
• Maintain beach cleanup supplies. Assist with the organization of merchandise, outreach materials, and supplies in storage units
• Work with Chapter Manager and volunteer leads to leverage the chapter’s volunteer network to assist with larger community beach cleanup requests.
• Work with chapter program leads and chapter manager to utilize beach cleanup audience attention to communicate and present additional volunteer opportunities and program work
• Communicate with stakeholders, vendors, and Executive Committee members to ensure smooth execution of projects and events.
• Maintain regular communications with Surfrider Foundation members and volunteers via the Golden platform, website, email, social media, events calendar and other channels (as pertaining to the beach cleanup program).
• Follow up with participants post-cleanup thanking them for their service and provide opportunities for further engagement.
• Create an annual Beach Cleanup Report that summarizes the year in review and analyze beach cleanup data to support advocacy campaigns and public policy work.
• Coordinate and manage partnership support with other organizations for major cleanup days including but not limited to Coastal Cleanup Day, Morning After Mess, and Creek to Bay
• Cultivate and maintain volunteers to support the public beach cleanup program

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Basic knowledge of coastal/marine environmental issues
• Ability to load, unload and carry beach cleanup supplies (up to 50 lbs.) for extended distances of up to 200 yards on sand, and up and down stairs
• Administrative experience, especially managing data on spreadsheets
• Basic computer literacy
• Public speaking skills
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Strong time management skills
• Ability to work in a high volume, deadline dependent environment
• Flexible schedule; available during weekday business hours, weekends and an occasional weekday evening for chapter meetings
• Self-motivated
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse partners, communities and volunteers
• Strong social skills
• Must have own vehicle to transport supplies and maintain a clean driving record (we reimburse for mileage at the federal rate)
• Basic knowledge utilizing social media platforms
• Nonprofit and volunteer coordination experience
• Strong writing skills
• Project management skills

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary Range Transparency:

Category Level: Coordinator (Chapter-Level Regional Support)

Salary Range: $48,000 Minimum - $60,000 Maximum

How Does the Surfrider Foundation Establish Salary Ranges? The Surfrider Foundation researches, evaluates, and compares like-sized non-profit organizations to establish ranges for each position level to ensure that employees are justly compensated. The intent is to compensate employees well within a median pay range philosophy.What does a “median pay range philosophy” mean? It means that if the range for a position is $50,000- $70,000 the median pay for that position would be $60,000. The established range takes multiple factors into account; experience, educational background, scope and complexity of work, special skills, added value to the organization, geographic cost-of-living, inflation/current market demand, equity, and more. The Surfrider Foundation prides itself on a high rate of retention, with 32% of staff having been employed with the organization for 10+ years. Please keep in mind that the maximum end of our ranges also account for longevity and tenure within the role.
