Job Description


Banana Kelly is a non-profit community development corporation located in the South Bronx. Our mission is to contribute to a revitalized, safe and economically vibrant South Bronx through the development and management of affordable housing and the provision of targeted human services. We empower residents through supportive services and vocational, educational, and cultural programs that assist in the retention of affordable housing accommodations and foster self-sufficiency and collective capacity through self-help, mutual aid and cooperation, community organizing and advocacy.

The Human Resources Specialist is responsible for handling any people-related concerns and needs that arise within the organization. The Specialist manages payroll, hiring and firing, as well as onboarding new hires and managing the orientation process to get employees set up in their new roles. HR Specialist maintains detailed employee records regarding any actions taken for legal purposes.


Fostering a safe work environment. Knowledge of The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA) is a must. HR Specialist will support this requirement by overseeing and conducting safety training, managing workplace injury logs and reporting and handling any worker's compensation needs that may arise.

Managing employee relations. HR Specialist will oversee these relationships with non-union and unionized workers (overseeing all labor contract issues).

Administering payroll. HR Specialist will provide payroll administration services for Banana Kelly. Familiarity with payroll software programs and resources a must.

Managing compensation and benefits packages. HR Specialist will oversee compensation and benefits packages for employees. Benefits packages include health and dental insurance, life insurance, retirement plans and other benefits. HR Specialist will negotiate group health coverage rates with various health insurance providers to get the best deal for our employees, coordinate retirement plan options and answer benefit questions from employees. HR Specialist will handle the open enrollment process each year, which involves providing information about benefit options and enrolling and re-enrolling employees in benefits.

Handling disciplinary needs. The HR Specialist handles employee discipline and documents any actions taken in response to misconduct.

Ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations. In addition to maintaining a safe workplace for employees, HR Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all other applicable labor regulations and laws.

Overseeing other HR matters as they develop.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $25.00 - $33.00 per hour
