Recreation and Lands Fellow

Duration 8 Month Fellowship: Starting February 5, 2024

Location Pike-San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron & Comanche National Grasslands
Comanche Ranger District, 27204 Highway 287, Springfield, CO

Fellowship Description

The Resource Assistant will assist with programmatic develop in both the Recreation and Lands-Special Uses Programs on the Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. There are a variety of projects that the Resource Assistant will have the opportunity to assist with or to spearhead in both the recreation and lands programs. Proposed projects include: field inspections using Esri Field Maps, administration of lands and recreation special use permits, developing a fee-system for recreation facilities on the grasslands, establishing grants and agreements to expand our recreation offerings, and growing our community outreach program. The Resource Assistant will have an office-field ratio of about 70-30 throughout their time on the Grasslands. This position is ideal for a self-starter with broad area of interest who is eager to learn about how the lands and recreation programs operate on a National Grassland.

The RA will have the opportunity to collaborate with FS staff and to travel to various project sites in the course of their work. A valid driver’s license is required for this position, there is no public transportation, but a government vehicle will be available.

Fellows will work and communicate with a HAF Program Manager during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3 blog posts highlighting their experience and development.

Special or Preferred skills
  • Comfortable working independently outside, in all weather conditions
  • Is good at networking and creating partnerships within the Forest Service as well as with private and non-profit groups and individuals
  • is proficient in and enjoys writing and communicating clearly;
  • has experience conducting field inspections using Esri Field Maps
  • is experienced at creating maps in ArcPro and ArcGIS Online

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ages 17 and up
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for 52 weeks/1 year
  • Starting June 2023
  • Driver’s license required
  • RA will be required to drive a government vehicle
  • 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student, recent grads, or young professionals
  • Minimum: completed 2 years at accredited university or earned an Associate’s degree or higher
  • Environmental Science or Natural Resource degree or similar majors preferred, but open to a variety of Bachelors or Masters degrees and recent grads with strong writing skills]
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
  • Participation in US Forest Service Orientation Training scheduled for June 2023 in Denver, CO. Travel arrangements covered.

Stipend + Benefits
  • $750 weekly pay stipend based on a 40-hour workweek*
  • $1000 monthly housing stipend
  • $50 monthly commuting stipend
  • Optional health care benefit provided by the RAP partner at no cost to the resource assistant
  • Up to $2,750 available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
  • Paid Federal holidays and 40 hours of leave
  • 80 hours of PTO for a 12 month internship
  • Direct Hiring Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours (excluding orientation week), DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.

About Us
The Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands are in Rural Southeastern Colorado and Southwestern Kansas. There are 3 offices that the Resource Assistant will work at in: Elkhart, KS, La Junta, CO, and Springfield, CO. The duty station for this position will be in Springfield, CO where there is a bunkhouse ~7 miles from the office. Springfield is a small town surrounded by grassland and beautiful canyons with petroglyphs, dinosaur tracks and the occasional fossil. Springfield is a small community, with a few restaurants and other businesses and is 3.5-hour drive from Pueblo CO and Colorado Springs.

The team out of Elkhart, La Junta and Springfield share resources and collaborate on many projects. As a Resource Assistant you will have a chance to meet and go into the field with all of our Grassland Staff and will be a welcome addition to the team.
