Gregg County Historical Museum Executive Director

The museum director is responsible for the development, execution, and management of the policies, programs, and initiatives of the Gregg County Historical Museum as directed by its Board of Directors in its mission of preserving the history of East Texas.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assumes management responsibility for all services and activities of the Gregg County Historical Museum.
  • Recommends and administers policies and procedures of the Board of Directors.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the organization.
  • Develops, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, strategies for enhancing the museum.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with persons and groups directly or indirectly involved in the planning, maintenance, operations, and development of the museum.
  • Coordinates the activities of and assists committee members with implementation of the work plan.
  • Serves as the museum’s primary external contact and spokesperson, including interaction with the media, community associations, and others as necessary and appropriate.
  • Coordinates the supervision and trains volunteer staff with the volunteer coordinator.
  • Email monthly Board meeting reminders; produces printed material for the Board meetings: attendance sheet, meeting minute notes for secretary, agenda, treasurer’s report, minutes, and other material requested by officers and committee chairman; attends and reports to the Board at its meetings; and distributes information as requested.
  • Prepares a variety of special reports as requested by Board members.
  • Administrative support for all committee chairmen and their projects, including fundraising, collection and exhibits, building and facilities, education programs and events, and donor management activities. Identifies new initiatives and partnerships to grow the GCHS membership and revenue.
  • Responsible for grant writing and grant evaluations and community/corporate sponsorships.
  • Administers all grants
  • Raises most of the funds used to support the museum
  • Plans the main events and fundraisers for the museum
  • Inputs all checks and donations into past perfect museum software and generates letters
  • Generates monthly membership renewals as well as coordinates the yearly membership drive
  • Coordinates the Balloon Sculpture program
  • Coordinates and oversees the restoration of the building and coordinates all contractors.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Understanding of non-profit management.
  • Strong understanding of organizational finance and management.
  • Expertise in crafting public/private partnerships.
  • Ability to develop and implement long-range plans.
  • Strong understanding of design principles as they relate to historical museums.
  • Understanding of issues confronting the non-profit world, donors, public agencies, and community organizations.
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with a Board of Directors.
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with both public and private sector individuals, officials, and organizations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with Longview City Council, Mayor’s office, County officials, business owners, financial institutions, non-profit partners, City staff, and community members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly public speaking.
  • Budget preparation, fiscal management and analysis.
  • Ability to supervise and manage professional, volunteer, and administrative staff members.

MANAGEMENT

  • Ability to develop long-term plans and programs and to evaluate work accomplishments.
  • Ability to analyze facts, exercise sound judgment, and arrive at valid conclusions.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, verbally, and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, colleagues, subordinates, Longview city officials, Mayoral office, County officials and the general public.
  • Ability to develop and control operating budgets. Skills in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Must be experienced in organizational development and have demonstrated or be able to demonstrate the ability to win the trust and confidence of diverse stakeholders, constituencies, and public and private collaborative organizations.
  • Ability to communicate with the Board of Directors.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • Experience serving as an organization’s chief spokesperson.
  • Experience developing and implementing an effective, centralized public relations program.
  • Knowledge of public information and community relations concepts, principles, methodology, and techniques.
  • Proven media relations and issues management experience.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging public relations issues and trends applicable to the museum and cultural fields.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The candidate is not required to meet all following education/experience requirements, and will receive sufficient supplemental training, but it will factor into the selection process.

  • 5 years museum or non-profit experience required
  • Bachelor’s degree in an administrative related field required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Computer and Internet skills, basic knowledge of Word and Excel
  • Further software training provided
  • Grant writing required
  • Fundraising skills required
  • Clear criminal record (will conduct background check)

VACATION AND SICK LEAVE

Absences of the director are to be approved by the chairman of the board of directors.

· Vacation – Ten workdays per calendar year with no carry-overs from one year to the next. Increase to fifteen days at the 5-year mark. Increase to 20 days at the 10-year mark.

· Sick Leave – Ten workdays per calendar year.

· Medical Appointments – Attempt to schedule appointments in the early morning or late afternoon. It is anticipated that such appointments will deduct no more than 2 hours from a workday.

· Personal – Approval of such absences is decided by the director. Employees will make up these absences except for dire situations, such as a death.

· Overtime hours are rewarded with time off.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodation can be made to enable people with disabilities to perform the described essential functions.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to climb multiple flights of stairs several times a day. The employee will be required to use a computer system for several hours a day, when necessary.
