Augustana awards the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in about 100 majors and related academic programs and a Master of Science in Speech and Language Pathology. Job Description:

Status: Full-time, Exempt 12 month position

Reports to: Director of Human Resources

Wage Grade: 740

Overview: The Human Resource Generalist provides human resources services to the Augustana campus with particular focus on employee recruitment, selection and on-boarding, leave of absence management employee and supervisory training, oversight of the performance management system, and facilitation of teams and group meetings.

Job Duties:

  • Upholds and supports company policies and procedures, and demonstrates integrity and logical reasoning while timely escalating sensitive or urgent issues to Assistant Director of Human Resources, Director of Human Resources, or executive leadership, as necessary.
  • Works with hiring managers when a job opening is identified and oversees and participates in the hiring process for assigned positions. Develops an effective recruiting strategy, ensures an effective selection process, communicates with applicants during and after the selection process, and ensures that the hiring decision follows the appropriate procedures and highest caliber candidate is hired.
  • Meet with supervisors and managers on an individual basis to address employee relations and/or supervision issues. Provide guidance on policy compliance and assist managers with strategies for dealing with performance issues and/or other workplace related issues.
  • Plan, implement, and update employee on-boarding activities including first-day orientation, new employee meetings, and other activities to assist new employees in transitioning to Augustana.
  • Administers employee leave of absence process including but not limited to FMLA, ADA, and VESSA. Meet with employees requesting leave to provide information on policy, requirements and completion of necessary paperwork. Provide information to payroll to ensure accurate payment during leave periods.
  • In collaboration with the HR Department, assist managers and supervisors in the performance appraisal process. Conduct or participate in training as necessary, review draft performance appraisals and provide feedback, send out reminders at designated intervals and review/suggest revisions of performance appraisals.
  • Administers employee reward programs including service awards for faculty, staff and administration. Review programs for effectiveness and suggest changes.
  • Work with other members of the Human Resources team and payroll team to provide excellent service to internal customers and find ways to support the mission of the College as it relates to our employees.
  • Assist employees with questions regarding the Augustana benefits package, terms of employment, compensation questions, and other issues related to employment at Augustana.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned

 


Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's in business, human resources or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated human resources, or closely related, experience.
  • Previous experience in a non-profit or education setting preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience in employee selection including working with hiring managers and/or hiring teams.
  • Strong presentation and group facilitation skills. Willingness to develop and deliver development initiatives to small and large groups.
  • Excellent communication skills with a focus on meeting the needs of a diverse campus population.
  • Understanding of accepted human resources principles and legal issues surrounding employment.
  • Ability to work independently with little direction.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and deal with difficult situations.
  • PHR or SHRM-CP preferred.

Physical Requirements: This position is located on campus, works in a traditional office environment, and requires significant presence out in the community to build and sustain relationships. The below requirements are expected:

  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Able to frequently move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Consistently operates a computer and other office machinery such as printer, copy machine, calculator, and other equipment.
  • Must be able to listen, hear, speak, read, write, and concentrate.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, bend, stoop, and stand for intermittently long periods of time.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information in person, or by video or phone.

Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position with a 40 hour work week. Standard days and hours of work are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may be required to work outside of these standard hours to meet needs of employee groups. This position may be eligible for hybrid-remote work one day per week following an appropriate training period.

Special Requirements: As key personnel representing the College to the campus this position requires excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to a diverse campus population, and the ability and willingness to model the mission and high standard of behavior of Augustana College. The successful candidate must pass a criminal background check.
