OVERVIEW
The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. The area provides a wide array of outdoor amenities and activities with miles of hiking and biking trails, national parks, two lakes, and the Sacramento River. The main campus is located in the city of Redding, population 90,000. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans, organizes, coordinates, develops, implements, and oversees the day-to-day operations of assigned student services assistance program and/or areas, serving as a liaison for students. Performs a variety of complex and highly responsible administrative and program support for assigned student services program or location.
Initiates, develops and maintains strong relationships with students to ensure student access and success within specific program guidelines. Actively collaborates with the external educational and student services area staff and with internal program staff to identify and use innovative and engaging practices to maximize student success especially for students requiring additional financial or academic assistance. Demonstrates leadership to encourage and model a holistic approach to programming and student support.

This job class is a classified administrator position and requires strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Promotes a positive atmosphere and facilitates cooperation and collaboration as a representative of the assigned program in interactions with the campus community and outside agencies and schools.

 
CLASSIFICATION: Range 20 on the Administrative Confidential Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a classified administrator position with a default CalPERS retirement.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability

 
Essential Functions:
  • Providesguidanceforassignedprogramorlocation,implementingspecificactivities and services in alignment with program guidelines to promote access to resources to facilitate post-secondary enrollment, student success, and follow up and retention interventions
  • Administers day-to-day activities and operations of the assigned program or location, implements and reviews annual program goals, determines and establishes program procedures
  • Assists students in understanding and navigating academic and college systems, includingadmissions,financialaid,academiccounseling,courseregistration, online learning management system, and college support programs
  • Develops, coordinates, and conducts workshops and activities for students
  • Providesday-to-dayleadershipandworkswithstafftoensureahighperformance, customer service-oriented work environment
  • Mayoverseehiring,onboarding,supervision,andevaluationofclassifiedstaffand student workers
  • Monitorsstudentacademicperformanceandengagement,providingguidanceand referrals to academic and students services resources as needed
  • Identifies and actively recruits qualified students, assisting students with applicationpaperwork,andmakingrecommendationsforfinalselectionintoassigned program
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of student program-related records and contacts; follow proper paper work and recordkeeping processes and adhere to all program deadlines
  • Assistsinpreparingannouncements,newsletters,andotherformsofcommunication regarding program-related events, activities, and initiatives.
  • In collaboration with appropriate manager/supervisor, gathers, reviews, and maintains studentsuccessdata,makesrecommendationsforimplementinginitiativestopromote student success, and identifies tools including technology to track support services and outcomes
  • Resolves issues to ensure that program objectives and policies are properly implemented
  • Monitors and controls expenditures in line with program budget; prepares and submits required grant/contract, federal, and institutional fiscal and accounting records
  • Promotespost-secondaryaccessbyinvolvementinvariouscommunityandpublic school forums, boards, and committees
  • Researchandconsultwithcollegeandcommunitysupportservicesandorganizations to identify available resources and address student needs
  • Understandsandimplementsallprocessesnecessaryforachievinggrantandfunding objectives where applicable
  • Workscollaborativelywithcollegeandcommunityeducatorsonreferralsandstudent records
  • Coordinates and leads individual meetings and/or small group workshops for students, and community members on topics related to access to post-secondary education
Knowledge of:
  • The K-12 California public educational system as well as community college, UC, CSU, and private postsecondary systems
  • General academic and financial assistance procedures
  • Programs and resources to support community college students
  • Federal, state, and district regulations and laws regarding assigned program goals and objectives, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), CaliforniaEducationCode,Title5,andtheFederalEducationRights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Diverseacademic,socioeconomic,cultural,disability,andethnicbackgroundsofK-12 and community college students
  • Specializedtechnicalandadministrativeprinciples,practices,andproceduresofthe assigned programs
  • Computerandapplicablesoftwareprogramsincludingdatabase,spreadsheet,and word processing software
  • Supportserviceneedsandresourcesforstudentsfrombackgroundsthathavenot prepared them for college readiness
  • CorrectEnglishusage,grammar,spelling,punctuation,andvocabularyfororaland written professional communication
  • Public speaking and basic marketing
Ability to:

Experience/Education

Education/Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Education, Social Work, Social Science, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in building positive relationships, motivating and supporting low income and potential first-generation students
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities
Experience Preferred:
  • Significant experience in coordinating and implementing programs designed to assist students in post-secondary education
  • Experience managing a caseload of students, working with individuals as well as groups

New Administrative Appointments will be placed at the step 1 on the Administrative Salary Schedule and will graduate to the next step on July 1st of the following year if they have rendered 5 months of satisfactory service, with subsequent steps annually thereafter to a maximum fifth step.

Salary placement would only be negotiable if the candidate held the same position with another community college and step 2 or 3 would be the maximum considered depending on the number of years of service.
